Apple Watch mécanique

2024

Inspired by H. Moser & Cie and Jack Spiggle, I modified and Apple Watch to transform it into a fully mechanical, automatic watch. The main challenge was connecting the watch's crown to the movement, to still be able to wind the mainspring and set the time.

Projet de fin d'année:
Simulation de protéines

2023

During my final year project, I worked on modelling blood-clotting proteins for the design and analysis of blood-contacting devices, such as artificial hearts or ventricular-assist devices. Using OpenFOAM, I created models of the proteins and managed to obtain model behaviours matching the available experimental data.

Shell Eco-marathon 2022

2022

Last year, I was the project manager for the University of Bath's Eco-marathon team. Our team competed in the south of France at the 2022 Shell Eco-marathon internal combustion engine event, where the aim was to travel 16 km using the least amount of fuel possible. As team manager, I oversaw the completion of the vehicle, planning of the project, travel logistics and reaching out to sponsors.

For this third-year project, our brief was to write a business plan and create a design for an eco-marathon vehicle. These vehicles are built to compete in student events with the aim of using as little fuel possible. Working in a team of six students, I was in charge of the design of a new steering system, from the feasibility study to the creation of a complete design for manufacting.

Optimising the thickness of the Space Shuttle's heat shield, using MATLAB to perform finite element analysis. Data for the external surface temperature of the shield was automatically extracted from .jpg graphs and translated into numerical data. The data was then used to simulate the energy transfer inside the shield with the Heat Equation, and various numerical methods were used. The shooting method was then applied to obtain the thickness of the shield from the maximum temperature at the inner surface.

This group project involved the design of a roof mechanism for a Rolls-Royce Dawn convertible and its simulation using SIMULINK. To operate the system, a motor had to be chosen and a gearbox designed from the requirements found using the simulation.

Modelisation numérique d'aérocapture d'un satellite

2019

In the Modelling Techniques unit of my degree, I was assigned the task of simulating the path of a spacecraft numerically around Titan. The aim was to use MATLAB to calculate to position of the spacecraft using the Runge-Kutta fourth-order method to solve ordinary differential equations. The insertion height required to achieve an orbit altitude of 1500 km given a set of initial conditions was then calculated using the shooting method.

Projet de seconde année : conception d'un arbre

2019

In the design unit of my second year of study, I had to design, in a group, a shaft for an elevator while following a precise brief and requirements. A report had to be produced detailing the design and selection processes, along with technical drawings of the shaft and assembly.

Conception d'une boîte de vitesses à 2 rapports

2019

As part of the Design and Manufacturing unit at the University of Bath, we were tasked with developing a concept for a 2-speed gearbox for a canoe. Following constraints and specifications, a hand made assembly drawing was to be produced, with a front section view and an end view. The task also included the creation of a parts list with the materials, manufacturing processes or supplier of each component.

Projet de première année : design d'un lanceur de balles

2019

I was team leader for the first year project at the University of Bath. The task was to develop from scratch an autonomous machine that will launch 3 ping-pong balls at different set distances. We had to generate and select concepts, work with a budget, and develop the machine to be manufactured from off-the-shelf and custom components. A report had to be written on the entire process, and the machine will be build in second year.

Analyse d'objet technique

2018

This task consisted in dismantling and mechanical assembly in groups, each group having a different artefact, study it and reassemble it. We had to examine and measure every component, then individually write a text on the purpose and function of the assembly, the materials used for each component and the processes used for their manufacture. An individual hand drawing of the exploded assembly was to be produced.

Conception d'une horloge

2018

This clock was inspired by the sculptures of Santiago Calatrava and timepieces by MB&F. Resembling the shape of a ship or a bridge, its movement is suspended in air using cables, and attached to a mast at a single point. The time is displayed by two rotating belts, one for the hours and one for the minutes. The design was based around pieces from disassembled clocks, which I used to make a physical prototype. Other bespoke components where handmade or 3D printed, such as the cylinder escapement and pulleys.

2017

This project was done as an exercise to improve my CAD skills and learn more about steam engines. I followed detailed drawings to recreate a full, constrained assembly of a model steam engine in Autodesk Fusion 360.

The original drawings by Julius de Waal are available here.
